Profile of Change: Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) received the 2006 American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize®, acknowledging the hospital's leadership and innovation in quality, safety and commitment to patient care. Additionally U.S. News & World Report's ranked CCHMC 8th among the more than 250 children's hospitals in the United States.

"We are committed to achieve for our patients the best outcomes, the best patient and family experience and the best value. Transforming patient care begins by bringing patients and families to the table with health care professionals and being transparent. Being transparent means we look at the good and the bad. Together we look at areas of the hospital that need improvement and discuss how we can make those needed changes happen," says James M. Anderson, president and chief executive officer of CCHMC.

In the spring of 1998, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center brought a team to the Institute for Family-Centered Care "Hospitals Moving Forward with Family-Centered Care" intensive seminar. Medical Home Project: Family Advisor - Ashley Peterson

Ashley Peterson calls Camerynn, her five-year-old daughter, her miracle baby. Camerynn was born with a rare brain disorder. A doctor predicted that if the baby lived, she would be extremely and profoundly disabled. At birth, not only was Camerynn beautiful, but she did not have nearly as many disabilities as predicted. Today because of her mom's determination, Camerynn will soon be starting Little League for kids with special needs. She loves to play soccer with her mom, ride her adaptive bike, swim, fly a kite, and play computer games.

In 2004, Camerynn's pediatrician, Dr. Marilyn Peitso, asked Ashley to participate in the Medical Home Project. Ashley is a member of the clinic's "Medical Home Team" which consists of three parents, the pediatrician, the pediatrician's nurse, and a care coordinator. Many parents and medical providers hope that the Medical Home concept will become the standard of care nationally. Medical Home, a national initiative sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics, provides comprehensive primary care for children with special health care needs. Read more...

Partnering with Patients and Families: A Roadmap for the Future

With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Institute for Family-Centered Care collaborated with the Institute for HealthCare Improvement and convened an invitational expert panel to respond to this briefing paper on patient and family partnerships in quality improvement and health care redesign.
